According to a new study, those who have recently been through extreme financial hardship have a 20-fold higher risk of trying suicide than those who have not.

Suicide attempts may become a greater concern in the near future as a result of the pandemic's economic impact.

Suicide attempts were linked to being in debt or facing a financial crisis, unemployment, previous homelessness, and lower income.

Suicide, or taking one's own life, is more common in men than in women in the world.

According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), over 48,000 persons died by suicide in the United States in 2018, with an estimated 1.4 million attempts. Men were 3.56 times more likely than women to commit suicide that year, according to the AFSP.

SUICIDE'S POSSIBLE CAUSES AND RISK FACTORS

Suicide can be caused by a variety of factors. Suicidal thoughts and behaviors are frequently triggered by a mix of causes.

People who consider or attempt suicide usually do so because they feel they can no longer cope with life. They may feel hopeless, impotent, insignificant, or lonely, and believe that suicide is their only option.

These emotions can be triggered by a variety of circumstances, including:

1. The end of a romantic relationship

2. Legal or financial issues

3. Joblessness

4. Physical distress

5. Family or friend disagreements

6. Loneliness caused by a family member's illness or death

Although having a mental health issue, such as depression, is a risk factor for suicide, not everyone who attempts suicide does so.

Individuals who are not in immediate danger of suicide but are considering suicide should speak with a trusted friend or family member, a doctor, a mental health professional, a clergyman, or another spiritual leader.
